Story / Plot
The Guardians of the Galaxy have become famous after saving Xandar. Their next job comes from the Sovereign, a technologically advanced race led by High Priestess Ayesha. The Guardians are hired to protect valuable Anulax batteries from an inter-dimensional creature called the Abilisk. In exchange, they receive Nebula, Gamora’s estranged sister, who had been captured by the Sovereign.
After the mission, Rocket secretly steals some of the batteries, angering the Sovereign. Their drone fleet attacks the Guardians, but a mysterious figure destroys the pursuing ships. The Guardians land on Berhert, where the stranger introduces himself as Ego and reveals that he is Peter Quill’s biological father. Ego also introduces Mantis, an empath who serves him.
While Quill, Gamora and Drax travel with Ego, Rocket and Baby Groot stay behind with Nebula to repair the ship. Meanwhile, Ayesha hires Yondu Udonta and his Ravager crew to capture the Guardians. A mutiny breaks out aboard Yondu’s ship, led by Taserface, while Nebula turns against Gamora.
Rocket, Yondu, Groot and Kraglin eventually escape the mutiny. At the same time, Gamora and Nebula discover a cave filled with the remains of Ego’s previous children. Ego then reveals the truth about his plan: he planted special seedlings on thousands of worlds and wants to use Quill’s Celestial power to activate them and transform those worlds into extensions of himself.
Ego also admits that he caused Meredith Quill’s brain tumor because he feared his attachment to her would interfere with his plan. Quill turns against Ego. The Guardians reunite and travel into Ego’s planetary core, where they attempt to destroy him and stop the expansion of his seedlings.
Rocket creates a bomb from the stolen Anulax batteries, and Baby Groot plants it inside Ego’s brain. Quill uses his Celestial powers to hold Ego back while the others escape. The bomb destroys Ego and his planet. Quill loses his Celestial powers in the process, while Yondu sacrifices himself to save him in space.
After Yondu’s death, the Guardians hold a funeral for him. The Ravagers arrive to honor Yondu and accept him back as one of their own. Mantis officially joins the Guardians, while Nebula leaves to continue her mission against Thanos.

Who is Ego?
Ego is Peter Quill’s biological father and a Celestial being. His apparent relationship with Meredith Quill was part of a larger plan to create offspring capable of carrying his Celestial power.
What was Ego’s plan?
Ego had planted special seedlings on thousands of planets. He needed the power of another Celestial to activate them. His goal was to make these worlds extensions of himself, effectively allowing his consciousness to spread throughout the universe.
Why did Ego kill Meredith?
Ego explains that Meredith’s love for him became a distraction from his larger objective. He therefore caused the brain tumor that eventually killed her. When Quill learns this, he turns against Ego.
