Story / Plot
Avengers: Endgame begins after the devastating events of Avengers: Infinity War, in which Thanos used the six Infinity Stones to erase half of all life in the universe. The surviving Avengers are left dealing with the consequences of their defeat.
Tony Stark is stranded in space with Nebula after the battle on Titan, while the remaining heroes on Earth struggle to understand how they can recover from the loss. Captain America, Black Widow, Thor, Bruce Banner, Rocket and the other surviving heroes are determined to find a way to reverse what happened.
When Captain Marvel helps bring Tony Stark and Nebula back to Earth, the Avengers discover that Thanos has already used the Infinity Stones again and destroyed them. The team eventually finds Thanos, but they learn that reversing his actions will not be as simple as defeating him.
Five years later, Scott Lang returns after becoming trapped in the Quantum Realm. His experience gives the Avengers a possible way to travel through time and retrieve the Infinity Stones from earlier points in history.
The Avengers develop a plan to travel into the past and collect the Infinity Stones before Thanos can obtain them. Different groups travel to different moments in the MCU timeline, revisiting events connected to earlier Marvel movies.
The plan succeeds in bringing the Infinity Stones to the present, but an unexpected problem allows a past version of Thanos to discover what the Avengers are attempting. Thanos and his army eventually arrive in the present, leading to the massive final battle.
The surviving Avengers and their allies fight Thanos and his forces in a desperate attempt to restore the lives that were lost. The battle ultimately forces the heroes to make enormous sacrifices to save the universe.
Ending Explained
The ending of Avengers: Endgame centers on the final confrontation between the Avengers and Thanos. After the Avengers recover the Infinity Stones from different points in time, Bruce Banner uses the Stones to reverse the effects of the Snap and bring back everyone who disappeared.
However, the victory is short-lived because Thanos from 2014 has followed the Avengers into the present. His army attacks the Avengers’ headquarters, creating the final battle of the movie.
Captain America eventually proves himself worthy of wielding Mjolnir and fights alongside Thor and the other heroes. The battle becomes even larger when Doctor Strange and the heroes who were restored after the Snap return to help.
Thanos eventually gains control of the Infinity Stones, but Tony Stark manages to take them from him. Tony uses the Stones himself, sacrificing his life to eliminate Thanos and his army.
After Tony Stark’s death, the surviving heroes mourn him. His final sacrifice completes the character’s long journey from a self-centered weapons manufacturer to someone willing to give his life to protect the universe.
Steve Rogers later returns the Infinity Stones to their proper places in the timeline. Instead of immediately returning to the present, he chooses to live a full life in the past. An older Steve eventually gives his shield to Sam Wilson, passing the role of Captain America to him.
The ending therefore closes the stories of several original Avengers while leaving the wider Marvel Cinematic Universe open for future heroes and stories.
