Story / Plot
Captain America: The First Avenger is set mainly during World War II and follows Steve Rogers, a physically weak but determined young man who desperately wants to serve his country. Despite repeatedly being rejected by the military because of his health and physical condition, Steve refuses to give up.
His determination catches the attention of Dr. Abraham Erskine, who selects him for a secret experiment designed to create a super-soldier. Steve receives the Super-Soldier Serum and becomes physically stronger, faster and more powerful. He is given the identity of Captain America and eventually becomes a symbol for the Allied forces.
Steve later joins forces with Peggy Carter, Colonel Chester Phillips and his friend Bucky Barnes. He takes part in missions against HYDRA, a powerful organization led by Johann Schmidt, also known as Red Skull.
Red Skull possesses the Tesseract and wants to use its extraordinary energy to create powerful weapons and help HYDRA dominate the world. Steve and his team work to stop HYDRA while Steve also tries to rescue captured soldiers, including Bucky.
As the war progresses, Steve becomes increasingly determined to stop Red Skull. His mission eventually leads to a final confrontation involving the Tesseract and a HYDRA aircraft carrying weapons that could cause enormous destruction.
Ending Explained
In the final part of the movie, Steve boards Red Skull’s aircraft after discovering that it is carrying dangerous weapons intended for American cities. Steve fights Red Skull and eventually manages to stop the aircraft from reaching its destination.
During the confrontation, Red Skull touches the Tesseract. Its power transports him away, leaving his ultimate fate unknown at that moment. The Tesseract falls into the ocean, while Steve realizes that the aircraft cannot safely land without putting innocent people at risk.
Steve decides to sacrifice himself and crashes the aircraft into the Arctic Ocean. Before doing so, he says goodbye to Peggy and promises that he will be back.
Steve survives the crash but remains frozen in the ice for decades. He eventually wakes up in the modern era and discovers that the world around him has changed completely.
When Steve realizes that the room around him is not actually from the 1940s, he escapes outside and finds himself surrounded by modern New York. Nick Fury then approaches him and explains that Steve has been asleep for almost 70 years.
The ending establishes Steve Rogers’ transition from a World War II hero to a modern-day Avenger and directly leads into the next stage of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
