Story / Plot
Iron Man 3 takes place after the events of The Avengers. Tony Stark has returned home after experiencing the Battle of New York, but the experience has left him struggling with anxiety and insomnia.
Tony becomes obsessed with building new Iron Man suits. He spends much of his time in his workshop creating increasingly advanced armor while Pepper Potts worries about his mental and physical condition.
At the same time, a mysterious terrorist called the Mandarin begins broadcasting threatening messages around the world. A series of devastating attacks causes governments and the public to fear the Mandarin and his organization.
Tony publicly challenges the Mandarin and gives him his home address. Soon afterward, helicopters attack Tony’s mansion and destroy his home. Tony survives but loses much of his equipment and is separated from Pepper.
Tony travels to Tennessee while investigating an earlier attack connected to a scientist named Maya Hansen. There he meets a young boy named Harley Keener, who helps him repair some of his equipment.
Tony discovers that the terrorist attacks are connected to a biological enhancement program called Extremis. The technology can give people extraordinary physical abilities, but it can also become extremely unstable.
Tony eventually discovers that the Mandarin is not actually the mysterious terrorist he appeared to be. The character is being portrayed by an actor named Trevor Slattery, who has been used as a public face for the real operation.
The real person behind the Mandarin operation is Aldrich Killian, the businessman who created the Extremis program. Killian has transformed himself using Extremis and has been using the Mandarin persona as part of his plan.
Killian captures Pepper and injects her with Extremis. He intends to use her as proof that the technology can transform people and become a powerful weapon.
Tony eventually returns to the fight. He calls in his collection of Iron Man suits and remotely controls them during the final battle.
James Rhodes, wearing the Iron Patriot armor, also joins the battle. Together, Tony and Rhodes fight Killian and his Extremis-powered soldiers.
Ending Explained
The ending of Iron Man 3 reveals that the Mandarin is not the real villain. Trevor Slattery is simply an actor who has been hired to play the Mandarin as a fictional terrorist figure.
The real mastermind is Aldrich Killian, who created the Extremis program and used the Mandarin identity to hide his activities and create fear around the world.
Killian captures Pepper Potts and gives her the Extremis treatment. The procedure gives Pepper enhanced strength and healing abilities, but it also puts her life at risk.
Tony uses his collection of remotely controlled Iron Man suits to attack Killian’s forces. During the battle, Tony destroys several Extremis soldiers with the help of James Rhodes.
Killian survives the initial attack and confronts Tony. He has become extremely powerful because of Extremis and manages to overpower Tony.
Pepper eventually fights back against Killian. After gaining control of her Extremis abilities, she uses an Iron Man armor component to destroy Killian and save Tony.
After the battle, Tony decides that he no longer needs to depend on the Arc Reactor implanted near his heart. He undergoes surgery to remove the remaining shrapnel from his chest.
Tony also orders the destruction of his Iron Man suits, symbolically showing that his identity is not defined by the armor.
The movie ends with Tony standing beside the ocean as he watches the destruction of the suits. He still remains Iron Man in spirit, but he has learned that the person inside the armor matters more than the armor itself.
Post-Credits Scene
In the post-credits scene, Tony talks to Bruce Banner about his experiences. Banner has been listening to Tony’s story but has apparently fallen asleep during the conversation.
The scene is mainly a humorous moment between Tony and Bruce and reinforces the connection between Iron Man 3 and the wider Marvel Cinematic Universe.
