Guardians of the Galaxy Story / Plot

The story begins on Earth in 1988, when a young Peter Quill is taken from Earth by the Ravagers shortly after the death of his mother. Years later, Peter has become a space-faring outlaw known as Star-Lord.

While exploring the abandoned planet Morag, Peter steals a mysterious Orb. He soon discovers that the Orb is wanted by Ronan the Accuser, a powerful Kree warrior working with Thanos.

Peter attempts to sell the Orb, but Gamora is sent to retrieve it. At the same time, bounty hunters Rocket and Groot are trying to capture Peter for the reward placed on him.

The four characters eventually end up in the hands of the Nova Corps and are sent to the Kyln prison. There they encounter Drax the Destroyer, who wants revenge against Ronan because Ronan’s forces killed his family.

Peter, Gamora, Rocket, Groot and Drax eventually form an uneasy alliance and escape from prison. Gamora reveals that the Orb contains an Infinity Stone, making it extremely dangerous.

The group travels to Knowhere to meet the Collector, who explains the destructive power of the Orb. However, the situation quickly becomes dangerous when the Orb is activated and destroys the Collector’s assistant, Carina.

Ronan eventually takes possession of the Orb and discovers that it contains the Power Stone. He uses its energy to enhance his weapon and decides to destroy Xandar rather than follow Thanos’s original instructions.

Peter and the others realize that they cannot simply run away. They decide to work together with the Nova Corps and the Ravagers to stop Ronan.

The final battle takes place above Xandar. The Guardians manage to crash Ronan’s ship, the Dark Aster, but Ronan survives and reaches the planet.

Ronan is eventually defeated when Peter, Gamora, Drax and Rocket join forces. The Guardians use the Power Stone together and destroy Ronan.

After saving Xandar, the group is pardoned by the Nova Corps and officially becomes known as the Guardians of the Galaxy.

Guardians of the Galaxy Ending Explained

What is the Orb in Guardians of the Galaxy?

The Orb contains the Power Stone, one of the six Infinity Stones. The stone contains enormous destructive energy and can destroy living beings and entire worlds when used by someone powerful enough.

Why does Ronan want the Power Stone?

Ronan is a Kree extremist who wants to destroy Xandar. He takes the Power Stone from the Orb and uses its energy to make his weapon vastly more powerful.

How do the Guardians defeat Ronan?

After Ronan’s ship crashes onto Xandar, he survives and prepares to destroy the planet. Peter distracts Ronan with a dance-off while the others attack him. Peter then grabs Ronan’s weapon and uses the Power Stone with Gamora, Drax and Rocket.

The combined effort allows the Guardians to control the Power Stone long enough to destroy Ronan.

Why does Groot sacrifice himself?

During the crash of the Dark Aster, Groot uses his body and branches to protect Rocket and the other Guardians from the impact.

Groot’s sacrifice saves the group. Although it initially appears that Groot has died, a small piece of Groot survives and eventually begins growing again.

Is Groot dead at the end of Guardians of the Galaxy?

The original Groot sacrifices himself during the destruction of the Dark Aster. A small branch survives, and the movie’s ending shows it growing into a new Groot.

The exact continuity of Groot’s identity has been discussed extensively by Marvel fans, but the movie clearly establishes that a new Groot begins growing from the surviving piece.

Why does Peter Quill hold the Power Stone without dying?

Peter is initially able to survive contact with the Power Stone because the other Guardians join him and share the burden of controlling its energy. The movie also establishes that Peter’s unusual heritage becomes relevant to his ability to survive the stone’s power.

Who is Peter Quill’s father?

In this first Guardians of the Galaxy movie, Peter’s biological father is not revealed. His father becomes a major part of the story in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.

Why does Peter Quill call himself Star-Lord?

Peter Quill adopted the name Star-Lord as his personal spacefaring identity. He is known throughout the galaxy as a thief, outlaw and adventurer using that name.

Why do the Guardians stay together?

The group begins as a temporary alliance formed for survival and profit. Their experiences gradually turn them into a genuine team. By the end, they choose to protect others together and become the Guardians of the Galaxy.
