Black Panther Story / Plot

After the events of Captain America: Civil War, T’Challa returns to Wakanda following the death of his father, King T’Chaka. He is preparing to take his rightful place as the new king of Wakanda while also continuing his responsibility as the Black Panther.

Wakanda appears to the outside world to be an isolated and relatively poor African nation. In reality, it is one of the most technologically advanced civilizations on Earth, powered by the country’s enormous supply of vibranium.

As T’Challa begins his reign, he is confronted by the return of Ulysses Klaue, a dangerous criminal who previously stole vibranium from Wakanda. T’Challa and his allies attempt to stop Klaue, but another threat soon emerges.

Erik Killmonger arrives in Wakanda and reveals that he has a personal connection to the royal family. He is the son of N’Jobu, T’Challa’s uncle, who had previously lived outside Wakanda.

Killmonger challenges T’Challa for the throne and eventually defeats him in ritual combat. Believing that T’Challa is dead, Killmonger becomes the new king of Wakanda.

As king, Killmonger plans to use Wakanda’s technology and weapons to arm oppressed people around the world and begin a global revolution. However, T’Challa survives and eventually returns to Wakanda to challenge Killmonger.

The final battle brings together T’Challa, the Dora Milaje and his allies against Killmonger and the forces supporting his rule. T’Challa ultimately defeats Killmonger and regains control of Wakanda.

Black Panther Ending Explained

Why does Killmonger challenge T’Challa?

Killmonger is driven by the circumstances surrounding his father N’Jobu’s death. N’Jobu believed Wakanda had a responsibility to help oppressed Black communities around the world. After N’Jobu was killed by T’Chaka, his son Killmonger grew up separated from Wakanda and eventually developed a plan to take control of the country.

How does T’Challa survive?

After Killmonger defeats T’Challa during their ritual challenge, T’Challa is thrown over a waterfall. He survives and is eventually discovered in critical condition by members of the Jabari Tribe. M’Baku and the Jabari provide him with shelter and help him recover.

How does T’Challa defeat Killmonger?

T’Challa returns to Wakanda and challenges Killmonger. Their final confrontation takes place near the vibranium mines, where the two fight while Wakanda’s forces battle around them. T’Challa eventually gains the advantage and defeats Killmonger.

What happens to Killmonger?

Killmonger is mortally wounded during his final battle with T’Challa. T’Challa offers him the possibility of being healed, but Killmonger refuses. Instead, he chooses to watch the sunset over Wakanda before dying.

What does T’Challa decide at the end?

T’Challa realizes that Wakanda cannot remain completely isolated from the rest of the world. He decides to share Wakanda’s knowledge and resources in a controlled way and establishes a Wakandan outreach center in Oakland, California, where his uncle N’Jobu once lived.
