Story / Plot
The story begins with Thor investigating a vision about Ragnarok, the destruction of Asgard. He encounters the fire demon Surtur, who explains that he will eventually use his power to destroy Asgard. Thor defeats Surtur and takes the demon’s crown.
When Thor returns to Asgard, he discovers that Loki has been impersonating Odin and ruling the kingdom. Thor forces Loki to help him find their father. Their search eventually takes them to Earth, where they encounter Doctor Strange.
Doctor Strange reveals that Odin is living in Norway. Thor and Loki find their father, who tells them that his death will allow Hela, his firstborn child and the goddess of death, to return.
After Odin dies, Hela arrives. She immediately demonstrates her enormous power and destroys Mjolnir when Thor attempts to use the hammer against her.
Thor and Loki are thrown through a portal and separated. Thor eventually crashes onto Sakaar, a chaotic planet ruled by the Grandmaster. He is captured by Valkyrie and sold to the Grandmaster as a gladiator.
Thor discovers that his opponent in the arena is none other than the Hulk. Bruce Banner has been trapped in Hulk form since the events of Avengers: Age of Ultron, and he has become one of the Grandmaster’s most successful champions.
Thor and Hulk fight in the arena, but Thor discovers that he cannot simply leave Sakaar. He eventually joins forces with Valkyrie, Banner and Loki to escape the planet and return to Asgard.
Back on Asgard, Hela has taken control of the kingdom. Heimdall secretly protects the Asgardian people while Hela builds an army using the dead warriors buried beneath Asgard.
Thor returns with his new allies and attempts to stop Hela. During the battle, Thor loses his right eye and struggles to understand how he can defeat Hela without Mjolnir.
Thor then receives a vision of Odin, who reminds him that Mjolnir was never the true source of his power. Thor realizes that his lightning abilities come from within him.
Thor understands that Hela cannot be defeated simply by fighting her. Since Hela’s power is connected to Asgard, Thor decides that Ragnarok must happen.
Loki retrieves Surtur’s crown and places it into the Eternal Flame. Surtur is resurrected and grows into a gigantic fire demon. He attacks Asgard and destroys the realm, defeating Hela in the process.
Thor, Loki, Valkyrie, Hulk and the surviving Asgardians escape aboard the Statesman. Thor accepts his responsibility as the leader of the surviving Asgardians and begins their journey toward Earth.
Ending Explained
The ending of Thor: Ragnarok is based on Thor realizing that Asgard is not simply a physical kingdom. As Odin tells him, Asgard is its people.
Thor initially tries to protect the kingdom from Hela by fighting her directly. However, Hela is too powerful, especially because she draws strength from Asgard.
Thor therefore realizes that destroying Asgard is the only way to permanently stop Hela. Loki brings Surtur back to life, and Surtur destroys Asgard while Hela is caught in the destruction.
Although Asgard is destroyed, the Asgardian people survive. Thor then becomes the leader of the survivors and decides to take them to Earth.
