Story / Plot

The story begins in Asgard, a powerful realm ruled by Odin, the king of the Asgardians. His son Thor is preparing to become the next king. Although Thor is brave and extremely powerful, he is also arrogant, impulsive and eager to prove himself.

During Thor’s coronation, Frost Giants from Jotunheim attempt to enter Asgard. Thor becomes furious and decides to travel to Jotunheim with Loki, Sif and the Warriors Three. Thor’s actions threaten the peace between Asgard and the Frost Giants and could restart an ancient war.

Odin is furious with Thor’s reckless behavior. As punishment, Odin removes Thor’s powers and banishes him to Earth. He also sends Mjolnir to Earth with an enchantment stating that only someone worthy can wield the legendary hammer.

Thor lands in New Mexico, where astrophysicist Jane Foster and her team discover him. Thor initially struggles to understand Earth and becomes determined to recover Mjolnir and return to Asgard.

However, Thor soon realizes that simply being powerful does not make him a worthy king. While Thor is on Earth, Loki discovers a secret about his origins and begins manipulating events in Asgard.

As the situation becomes more dangerous, Thor’s friends travel to Earth to find him. Loki eventually sends the Destroyer to Earth to stop Thor.

Thor is initially powerless, but instead of escaping, he chooses to protect Jane and the people around him. His willingness to sacrifice himself proves that he has finally learned humility and selflessness.

Thor becomes worthy of Mjolnir once again. The hammer returns to him, his powers are restored, and he uses them to defeat the Destroyer.

Thor then returns to Asgard, where he confronts Loki and attempts to stop him from destroying Jotunheim.

Thor (2011) Ending Explained

Near the end of the movie, Loki sends the Destroyer to Earth to kill Thor. At this point, Thor still has no powers and cannot properly defend himself. Instead of trying to save himself, Thor sacrifices his life to protect Jane, her friends and the people around him.

This sacrifice demonstrates that Thor has changed. He is no longer the arrogant prince who wants power simply because he believes he deserves it. Odin’s enchantment on Mjolnir recognizes Thor’s worthiness.

Mjolnir flies back to Thor, restoring his powers. Thor becomes the God of Thunder again and defeats the Destroyer.

Thor then returns to Asgard and confronts Loki. Loki’s plan involves using the Bifrost to destroy Jotunheim and eliminate the Frost Giants.

Thor realizes that stopping Loki requires destroying the Bifrost bridge. He destroys it, preventing Loki from carrying out his plan but also leaving Thor separated from Jane and Earth.

Loki eventually falls into space after Odin rejects his actions. Thor remains in Asgard while Jane continues looking for a way to contact him.

The post-credits scene features Nick Fury showing Erik Selvig the Tesseract. Loki is secretly influencing Selvig, establishing a connection to the wider Marvel Cinematic Universe and future MCU events.
