Story / Plot
Iron Man 2 begins after the events of the first movie, with Tony Stark publicly known to be the man inside the Iron Man armor. Tony has become a global celebrity, but his success creates new problems. The U.S. government wants access to his Iron Man technology, believing that the armor could be used as a military weapon.
Tony refuses to hand over the technology because he believes it could become dangerous if it falls into the wrong hands. At the same time, he discovers that the technology keeping his armored suit running is also causing a serious health problem.
Meanwhile, Ivan Vanko, a brilliant Russian physicist, develops his own powerful technology based on the work of his father, Anton Vanko. Ivan blames the Stark family for his father’s past and wants revenge against Tony.
Tony also faces competition from businessman Justin Hammer, who wants to challenge Stark Industries in the weapons industry. Hammer eventually works with Ivan and helps him develop a group of powerful armored machines.
As Tony struggles with his health and personal problems, James Rhodes takes one of Tony’s Iron Man suits. The armor is later upgraded and becomes the foundation for War Machine.
Tony eventually discovers a new element that can replace the dangerous material powering the arc reactor in his chest. With a new source of energy and renewed determination, he returns to the fight.
In the final battle, Iron Man and War Machine work together against Whiplash and Hammer’s automated armored drones. They manage to defeat the machines and stop Ivan Vanko’s attack.
Ending Explained
At the end of Iron Man 2, Tony Stark and James Rhodes fight together as Iron Man and War Machine. They successfully destroy Whiplash’s drones and stop Ivan Vanko from carrying out his plan.
Ivan Vanko is defeated, while Justin Hammer is arrested for his involvement in the dangerous weapons operation.
Tony’s health problem is also resolved after he creates a new element that can safely power his arc reactor. This allows him to continue using the Iron Man armor without relying on the technology that was slowly poisoning him.
The movie also strengthens Tony’s connection with S.H.I.E.L.D. and introduces Natasha Romanoff, also known as Black Widow, to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The post-credits scene connects Iron Man 2 directly to Thor. Agent Coulson travels to New Mexico and discovers a large crater containing Mjolnir, Thor’s hammer.
