Story / Plot

Avengers: Infinity War begins with Thanos and his forces attacking the Asgardian refugee ship carrying Thor, Loki, Hulk and the surviving Asgardians after the events of Thor: Ragnarok. Thanos is searching for the Infinity Stones, powerful artifacts that can give him control over reality itself.

Thanos already possesses the Power Stone when he attacks the ship. He takes the Space Stone from the Tesseract and defeats the Asgardians. Loki attempts to trick Thanos, but Thanos kills him. Heimdall uses the Bifrost to send Hulk to Earth, where Bruce Banner arrives at the New York Sanctum.

Banner warns Doctor Strange and Tony Stark that Thanos is coming for the Infinity Stones. Doctor Strange possesses the Time Stone, while Vision has the Mind Stone embedded in his forehead. The Avengers therefore become directly involved in Thanos’ search for the Stones.

Meanwhile, Thanos’ forces attack Vision and Wanda Maximoff. Captain America, Black Widow and Falcon arrive to help them, and the group eventually travels to Wakanda for protection and to remove the Mind Stone from Vision without killing him.

In space, Thor is rescued by the Guardians of the Galaxy after Thanos destroys the Asgardian ship. Thor explains that Thanos needs all six Infinity Stones and travels with Rocket and Groot to Nidavellir to obtain a new weapon capable of killing Thanos.

Tony Stark, Doctor Strange, Peter Parker and the Guardians of the Galaxy confront Thanos on Titan. They manage to temporarily restrain him and come close to removing the Infinity Gauntlet, but their plan fails after Peter Quill learns that Thanos killed Gamora.

Thanos continues collecting the Infinity Stones. He eventually obtains the Time Stone from Doctor Strange after forcing Strange to surrender it in exchange for Tony Stark’s life.

The final battle takes place in Wakanda, where the Avengers and Wakandan forces attempt to prevent Thanos from removing the Mind Stone from Vision. Thor arrives with Stormbreaker and nearly defeats Thanos, but Thanos still manages to complete his mission.

With all six Infinity Stones in the Infinity Gauntlet, Thanos snaps his fingers. Half of all life in the universe disappears. The surviving heroes are left devastated as several of their friends turn to dust.

Ending Explained

The ending of Avengers: Infinity War is built around Thanos successfully completing his mission. After collecting the six Infinity Stones, he gains almost unlimited power through the Infinity Gauntlet.

Thor manages to strike Thanos with Stormbreaker during the final battle in Wakanda. However, Thor attacks Thanos in the chest instead of immediately going for a killing blow. Thanos tells Thor that he should have gone for the head.

Thanos then uses the completed Infinity Gauntlet to snap his fingers. The Snap causes half of all living beings across the universe to disappear.

Among the characters who disappear are Spider-Man, Black Panther, Doctor Strange, Bucky Barnes, Falcon, Scarlet Witch, Star-Lord, Drax, Mantis, Groot and many others.

Peter Parker’s death is particularly emotional because he realizes that he is disappearing while Tony Stark is beside him. Peter tells Tony that he does not want to die before turning to dust.

Doctor Strange also disappears, but before doing so he tells Tony Stark that there was no other way. Earlier, Strange had used the Time Stone to examine millions of possible outcomes of the conflict with Thanos. He had seen only one path that could ultimately lead to victory.

The movie then shows Thanos in a peaceful location watching the sunrise. He has achieved what he believes is his purpose: reducing the population of the universe by half so that the remaining population can survive with greater resources.

The post-credits scene shows Nick Fury and Maria Hill witnessing people disappearing around them. Fury uses a special device to send an emergency message before he also turns to dust. The message reaches Captain Marvel, setting up her role in the events that follow.

The ending is intentionally unresolved. Thanos wins the battle, but the story continues directly into Avengers: Endgame, which deals with the consequences of the Snap and the Avengers’ attempt to reverse what happened.
