Constantine Story / Plot
Constantine is a supernatural action-horror film set in modern-day Los Angeles, where the world of ordinary humans exists alongside an invisible struggle between Heaven and Hell. Most people cannot see the supernatural beings around them, but John Constantine can. He is an experienced occult detective and exorcist who recognises demons hiding inside human bodies and works to send them back to Hell.
Constantine’s abilities are not a gift he enjoys. As a teenager, he was tormented by visions of supernatural creatures and tried to end his own life. He was revived, but the experience left him with a terrifying certainty about what awaits him after death. Because suicide is considered a grave sin in the world of the film, Constantine believes he is destined for Hell. He now performs exorcisms and fights demons in the hope of earning enough favour to change his ultimate fate.
The story begins in Mexico, where a man discovers a mysterious spear wrapped in cloth. The object turns out to be the Spear of Destiny, the weapon associated with the piercing of Jesus Christ. The man takes it to Los Angeles, setting events in motion that will threaten the boundary between the human world and the supernatural realms.
In Los Angeles, police detective Angela Dodson is devastated by the death of her identical twin sister, Isabel, who died after falling from the roof of a psychiatric institution. The official explanation is suicide, but Angela refuses to believe that her sister would have willingly taken her own life. She wants to understand what happened and suspects that something has been concealed.
Angela seeks out Constantine because she believes he may be able to explain the strange circumstances surrounding Isabel’s death. Constantine initially resists getting involved, but he eventually agrees to investigate. As they examine the case, Angela begins to witness things that challenge her understanding of reality.
Constantine’s investigation reveals that the balance between Heaven and Hell is governed by a set of rules. Neither side is supposed to openly seize control of Earth. Instead, angels and demons influence humanity indirectly, attempting to sway human choices while remaining within the limits imposed on them.
Constantine’s friend and associate Chas Kramer helps him with his supernatural work. Another important figure is Papa Midnite, a nightclub owner who maintains a delicate neutrality between the forces of good and evil. Midnite’s establishment serves as a meeting place where supernatural figures and human practitioners can interact without immediately triggering open conflict.
As Constantine and Angela investigate, they discover that the demon Balthazar is involved in a larger scheme. Balthazar is a half-breed demon who operates in the human world and knows more about the plot than he initially admits. The clues suggest that the Spear of Destiny is connected to a plan that could allow Mammon, the son of Lucifer, to enter the human world.
Angela’s investigation also forces her to confront the truth about Isabel. Isabel possessed the same ability to perceive supernatural beings and had been institutionalised after her experiences were misunderstood. She ultimately chose death rather than continue living with the terrifying visions and the sense of isolation they caused.
Constantine and Angela gradually uncover a plot involving Gabriel, an angel who believes humanity has become undeserving of divine favour. Gabriel plans to help Mammon cross into the human world, believing that humanity must experience suffering and temptation before it can prove itself worthy of God’s love. This is not an act of obedience to Heaven’s established order; Gabriel has decided to interfere with it.
For Mammon to cross into the human realm, he needs a powerful psychic conduit and the Spear of Destiny. Angela becomes central to the plan because of her supernatural sensitivity and her connection to Isabel. The conspirators intend to use her as the means through which Mammon can enter the world.
Constantine realises that the situation is far more dangerous than an ordinary demonic possession. If Mammon succeeds, the balance between Heaven, Hell and humanity will be destroyed. Constantine must stop Gabriel’s plan, protect Angela and face the personal consequences of the bargain he has long feared: what will happen to him when he finally dies?
Constantine Ending Explained
What is Gabriel’s real plan?
Gabriel is an angel who has become frustrated with humanity. Gabriel believes that people receive divine mercy too easily and that humanity must suffer more deeply before it can truly deserve God’s love. Rather than follow Heaven’s rules, Gabriel secretly works to help Mammon, Lucifer’s son, enter the human world.
The plan uses Angela as a human conduit and the Spear of Destiny as a key element in the supernatural ritual. If Mammon enters the world, Hell will gain a powerful foothold in human existence. Gabriel believes the resulting suffering will force humanity to prove itself, but this belief is based on pride and a distorted understanding of divine justice.
Why is Isabel Dodson important?
Isabel is Angela’s twin sister. Like Angela, she could perceive supernatural beings, but she was unable to cope with what she saw. Her experiences led to her being placed in a psychiatric institution, where she eventually died after jumping from the roof.
Angela initially believes Isabel’s death must have involved something more than the official explanation. Her investigation reveals that Isabel’s connection to the supernatural was real, and that her death is tied to the larger plan involving Mammon. Isabel’s story also shows the emotional cost of having a gift that isolates someone from the world around them.
Does Constantine defeat Mammon?
Constantine intervenes before Mammon can fully enter the human world. He disrupts the ritual and prevents the transfer from being completed. The immediate threat is stopped, but Constantine is severely injured and appears to be dying.
Gabriel then reveals their betrayal of Heaven’s intended order. The confrontation demonstrates that the conflict is not simply between good angels and evil demons. Even a being associated with Heaven can become dangerous when pride and a desire to control humanity override compassion.
Why does Constantine cut his wrists?
Near death, Constantine understands that ordinary methods will not stop the final stage of the plot. He deliberately cuts his wrists, bringing himself to the point of death so that he can summon Lucifer directly. Constantine knows that Lucifer will appear because he has been waiting for Constantine’s soul.
Constantine’s act is a desperate gamble. He believes that Lucifer’s personal interest in claiming him will force the Devil to intervene in the supernatural crisis. Rather than trying to bargain with a distant power, Constantine makes himself the centre of the confrontation.
Why does Lucifer appear?
Lucifer appears because Constantine is about to die and Lucifer expects to claim his soul. Constantine has attempted suicide in the past, and Lucifer believes that Constantine’s fate is already secured. His arrival is driven by the opportunity to collect a soul he considers rightfully his.
However, Constantine uses Lucifer’s presence to expose Gabriel’s plan. Lucifer discovers that Gabriel has been helping Mammon enter the human world, a scheme that threatens Lucifer’s own authority. The Devil is not willing to allow another being to interfere with his domain and power.
How does Lucifer stop Gabriel?
Lucifer confronts Gabriel and strips the angel of the power that made Gabriel a supernatural authority. He removes Gabriel’s wings, leaving Gabriel mortal and vulnerable. Gabriel’s plan collapses, and Mammon is prevented from taking over the human world.
The scene also reverses the expected moral hierarchy. Gabriel believed that humanity needed to suffer to earn divine love, while Lucifer acts to protect his own interests. Yet Lucifer’s intervention also prevents a catastrophe, showing that supernatural beings in this film do not always behave according to simple labels of good and evil.
Why does Lucifer try to take Constantine’s soul?
Lucifer still believes Constantine’s soul belongs to him. Constantine has spent the film trying to earn his way out of Hell, but Lucifer sees no reason to release his claim. He intends to take Constantine with him once the immediate crisis is resolved.
Constantine, however, has made a selfless choice by risking his life to save Angela and prevent Mammon’s arrival. Lucifer notices that Constantine’s actions have changed the spiritual balance surrounding him. Instead of simply claiming him, Lucifer finds that Constantine has a chance at redemption.
Why does Lucifer bring Constantine back to life?
Lucifer realises that Constantine’s willingness to sacrifice himself has made him a candidate for Heaven. If Constantine dies at that moment, he may be taken away from Lucifer forever. Lucifer refuses to lose the soul he has wanted for so long, so he heals Constantine and returns him to life.
This is one of the film’s central ironies: Constantine’s attempt to save others brings him closer to redemption, but Lucifer prevents him from dying because the Devil wants another chance to claim him later. Constantine’s salvation is delayed rather than permanently resolved.
What happens to Chas Kramer?
Chas is killed during the final confrontation, but he does not simply disappear. After the crisis, he appears as an angel, revealing that his bravery and selflessness have earned him a place among the heavenly beings. His transformation suggests that his time working alongside Constantine has helped him become the kind of person capable of redemption.
Chas’s fate contrasts with Constantine’s. Chas dies and is rewarded with a heavenly existence, while Constantine survives and must continue struggling with his own spiritual future.
What happens to Angela at the end?
Angela survives the events and is freed from the immediate danger posed by Mammon’s attempted arrival. She has learned that the supernatural world is real and that her sister’s death was connected to forces far beyond ordinary human understanding.
At the end, Constantine gives Angela the Spear of Destiny to keep safe. The gesture suggests that she has become more aware of the supernatural forces around her and may continue to play a role in protecting the boundary between worlds.
Why does Constantine stop smoking at the end?
After Lucifer brings Constantine back to life, Constantine begins to move away from the self-destructive habits that defined him. He removes the cigarette from his mouth and places it away, signalling that he has been given another chance to change his life.
The gesture is symbolic rather than a guarantee that his spiritual problems are permanently solved. Constantine has been returned to the world, but he still has to decide what kind of person he will become.
What does the ending of Constantine mean?
The ending is about redemption, sacrifice and the possibility of changing one’s fate. Constantine begins the film convinced that Hell is waiting for him because of his earlier suicide attempt. By choosing to sacrifice himself for another person, he performs an act that changes how his soul is judged.
The film also challenges the idea that appearances reliably identify good and evil. Gabriel’s pride leads to a catastrophic plan, while Lucifer’s selfish intervention saves humanity from Mammon. The final result is not that evil becomes good, but that supernatural motives are more complicated than the labels attached to them.
Constantine survives, Chas becomes an angel, Angela is safe, and Mammon’s attempted invasion fails. Yet Constantine’s long-term fate remains uncertain. Lucifer has given him another chance, but their conflict is far from over.
