Story / Plot

The story begins in modern-day Paris, where Diana Prince receives an old photograph of herself with Steve Trevor. The film then takes us back to her childhood on the hidden island of Themyscira, home of the Amazons.

Diana is raised by her mother, Queen Hippolyta, and trained by her aunt Antiope to become a powerful warrior. Diana believes that the Amazons were created to protect humanity from the influence of Ares, the god of war.

Her life changes when American spy and pilot Steve Trevor crashes into the waters surrounding Themyscira. Diana saves him and learns from Steve that the outside world is trapped in the First World War. He explains that the conflict is destroying millions of lives.

Believing that Ares may be responsible for the war, Diana decides to leave Themyscira with Steve. She travels to London and then to the Western Front, where she witnesses the devastation caused by the war.

Diana becomes convinced that General Ludendorff and Doctor Poison are developing a dangerous chemical weapon that could prolong the war. She joins Steve and his team as they attempt to stop them.

During the famous No Man’s Land sequence, Diana steps onto the battlefield and uses her powers to protect the soldiers and civilians trapped in the conflict. Her actions allow the Allied forces to advance.

Diana eventually confronts Ludendorff and believes that killing him will end the war because she thinks he is Ares. However, Ludendorff’s death does not stop the conflict.

As the war continues, Diana begins to understand that humanity itself is capable of both good and evil. The truth about Ares is eventually revealed, forcing Diana to question everything she believed about the nature of war and humanity.

Ending Explained

Near the end of the movie, Diana discovers that Sir Patrick Morgan, the British official who appeared to support the peace negotiations, is actually Ares in disguise.

Ares reveals that he did not directly create humanity’s evil. Instead, he believes that humans are naturally capable of violence and destruction. He has been trying to convince Diana that humanity does not deserve to be protected.

Diana refuses to accept Ares’ view. Steve and the others are trapped as Doctor Poison’s chemical weapon threatens to cause even greater destruction.

Steve realizes that the only way to stop the weapon is to sacrifice himself. He takes control of the aircraft carrying the deadly gas, flies it high into the sky and destroys it, saving countless people on the ground. His death deeply affects Diana.

Diana then fights Ares with the full extent of her powers. She finally understands that the real power of the gods’ weapon is not simply physical strength. Her ability to choose love, compassion and humanity allows her to reject Ares’ belief that mankind is beyond saving.

Diana defeats Ares and destroys him. The battle does not magically end the war, but the armistice eventually brings the conflict toward an end.

In the present day, Diana continues to protect humanity. She receives a message from Bruce Wayne along with the photograph of herself and Steve Trevor. The ending connects her World War I experience to the modern-day events of the DCEU and explains why Diana has remained hidden from humanity for so long.
