V for Vendetta Story / Plot
V for Vendetta is a dystopian political thriller set in a future Britain ruled by the Norsefire Party, an authoritarian government that maintains control through propaganda, surveillance, censorship and fear. The country is led by High Chancellor Adam Sutler, whose public image presents him as a defender of order while his administration suppresses anyone it considers dangerous or undesirable.
The story begins with Evey Hammond, a young woman working for the state-controlled television network BTN. Her childhood was marked by tragedy: after a devastating biological attack, her parents became involved in resistance activities, and she eventually lost them to the government’s brutal system. Evey has learned to survive by keeping her head down rather than openly challenging the authorities.
One night, Evey breaks curfew and is confronted by members of the secret police, known as the Fingermen. Before they can assault her, a mysterious masked man intervenes. Calling himself only V, he defeats the officers and takes Evey to a rooftop, where she witnesses his spectacular destruction of the Old Bailey courthouse, accompanied by fireworks and music.
The following morning, V takes control of BTN’s broadcast system and addresses the public. He accepts responsibility for the bombing and condemns the government for stealing people’s freedoms. He calls on ordinary citizens to gather outside Parliament on November 5, the following year, when he intends to carry out a much larger act against the regime.
V continues his campaign by targeting people connected to the government’s crimes. His victims include Lewis Prothero, a propagandist who helped spread the regime’s lies; Dr. Delia Surridge, who was involved in experiments at the Larkhill detention facility; and Bishop Anthony Lilliman, a powerful religious figure who abused his position. These killings reveal that V’s mission is tied to terrible events from his own past.
Meanwhile, Chief Inspector Eric Finch investigates V’s attacks. As he follows the evidence, Finch discovers troubling connections between the government, a past biological crisis and the Larkhill facility. The investigation begins to undermine his faith in the authorities he serves.
Evey later finds refuge with Gordon Deitrich, her boss and a television presenter. Gordon secretly possesses banned artwork and other materials that contradict the government’s carefully controlled version of history. His willingness to challenge the regime becomes dangerous when he uses his television programme to mock Sutler. The authorities retaliate, and Gordon is arrested and killed.
After Evey attempts to escape, she is captured and subjected to imprisonment, interrogation and torture. During her confinement, she discovers a message written by Valerie Page, a woman who describes how she held on to her identity and beliefs despite persecution. Valerie’s account gives Evey the courage to refuse to betray anyone, even when she believes she may be killed.
Evey is eventually released and learns that her imprisonment was staged by V. He had arranged the ordeal to force her to confront her deepest fear: the possibility of death. Evey is furious at first, but she comes to understand the importance of Valerie’s message and the suffering V experienced. She leaves with a new sense of courage and promises to return on November 5.
As the anniversary approaches, V distributes Guy Fawkes masks throughout the country. The masks become a symbol of resistance, allowing people to stand together rather than feel isolated. When authorities violently respond to an ordinary citizen wearing one, public anger grows, and unrest spreads through London.
V’s plan reaches its final stage when he reveals to Evey that he has restored an abandoned underground railway line and prepared a train carrying explosives. The train is intended to travel beneath Parliament, destroying the symbol of the regime’s power. V gives Evey the choice of sending it on its journey, because he does not expect to survive the final confrontation.
At the same time, V negotiates with Peter Creedy, the head of the secret police. V offers to surrender if Creedy brings him Sutler. Creedy accepts, hoping to eliminate the Chancellor and seize power for himself. But V’s plan is not simply to replace one ruler with another: he intends to break the system that allows the government to rule through fear.
V for Vendetta Ending Explained
Why does V allow himself to be shot?
V’s final confrontation takes place after Creedy brings Sutler to him. Creedy executes the Chancellor, believing V will honour their agreement and surrender. Instead, V refuses to submit. He fights Creedy and his men, killing them despite being shot repeatedly. V’s survival long enough to defeat his attackers is not presented as proof that he is invulnerable; he is mortally wounded and knows that his time is running out.
V’s actions reflect his belief that the idea behind the mask matters more than the identity of the person wearing it. The government can kill an individual, but it cannot easily erase an idea once ordinary people have embraced it. His famous claim that ideas are bulletproof captures the central theme of the film: fear can control people, but courage and shared conviction can challenge authority.
Does V die at the end?
Yes. V returns to Evey after the battle and dies from his injuries in her arms. Before he dies, he expresses his love for her. Their relationship is complicated by the fact that V used deception and psychological suffering to push Evey beyond her fear. Nevertheless, she ultimately chooses to honour his final wish and complete the plan he began.
Why does Evey send the train toward Parliament?
V leaves Evey in control of the train carrying explosives. She could refuse to activate it and abandon his plan, but she decides that the government must face the consequences of its oppression. She places V’s body aboard the train and sends it toward Parliament.
The destruction of Parliament represents the collapse of the regime’s authority and the end of the political order that Sutler and Creedy maintained. It is not simply an act of revenge against a building; it is the symbolic climax of a revolution that V has spent a year preparing.
Why does Finch let Evey go?
Finch has spent the film investigating V and uncovering evidence that the government has concealed. As he learns more about the Larkhill experiments and the regime’s abuses, his loyalty to Norsefire begins to crumble. When he finds Evey beside the train, he has the opportunity to stop her, but he chooses not to.
Finch’s decision shows that the resistance has affected more than the people already fighting the government. Even a police inspector who once served the system can recognise its corruption. By allowing Evey to proceed, Finch makes his own moral break from the regime.
Why are so many people wearing V’s mask?
The crowd gathered near Parliament wears the same Guy Fawkes mask that V has worn throughout the film. The masks represent anonymity, unity and the possibility that resistance belongs to everyone, not just one extraordinary individual. The people in the crowd come from different backgrounds, but the shared symbol allows them to stand together against the same oppressive system.
As the crowd advances, the military receives no clear orders to attack. With the government’s leadership destroyed and its authority collapsing, the soldiers stand down. Parliament is then destroyed as the crowd watches.
What does Evey mean when she says, “He was all of us”?
At the end, Finch asks Evey who V really was. She answers that he was everyone. Her response does not mean that every person literally became the masked man. It means V’s identity is no longer the most important part of his story. His purpose has spread beyond one individual, and the people who now stand against tyranny have taken ownership of the idea he represented.
The ending leaves the future of Britain open. Parliament has fallen and Norsefire’s leadership has been removed, but the film does not show the country rebuilding its institutions or resolving every political problem. Instead, it ends at the moment when the population begins to reclaim its power.
What is the deeper meaning of V for Vendetta?
The film explores the relationship between fear and freedom, the danger of state propaganda, the abuse of power and the importance of personal courage. V’s methods are violent and morally complicated, so the story does not present every action he takes as unquestionably right. Instead, it asks viewers to consider how people respond when a government uses fear to justify cruelty and silence opposition.
Valerie’s letter is especially important because it shows that resistance can begin with preserving one’s dignity and identity, even when the outside world tries to take them away. Evey’s transformation carries a similar message: freedom requires more than wanting a better society; it also requires the courage to stop living entirely under the control of fear.
