Story / Plot
Eight years after the events of The Dark Knight, Bruce Wayne has withdrawn from society and Batman has disappeared. Gotham City has enjoyed a period of relative peace under the Dent Act, while Commissioner Gordon continues to carry the secret surrounding Harvey Dent’s crimes.
The situation changes when Bane arrives in Gotham with a plan to take control of the city and complete the mission begun by Ra’s al Ghul. At the same time, Selina Kyle becomes involved with Bruce Wayne, while John Blake, a young police officer, begins to uncover the truth about Batman.
Bane eventually defeats Batman and takes control of Gotham. Bruce is imprisoned in the underground prison known as the Pit while Bane uses a nuclear weapon to hold the city hostage. Batman eventually escapes, returns to Gotham and joins the police in their final battle against Bane’s forces.
Ending Explained
During the final battle, Miranda Tate reveals that she is actually Talia al Ghul, the daughter of Ra’s al Ghul. Bane has been helping her carry out her father’s plan to destroy Gotham.
Talia activates the nuclear bomb and attempts to protect it while Batman and the police fight to stop her. Selina Kyle kills Bane, allowing Batman to pursue Talia and try to return the bomb’s reactor core to a stable state.
Talia’s vehicle crashes, and she dies before the bomb can be stopped. Batman realizes that the bomb will still explode, so he uses the Bat to carry it away from Gotham and over the bay. He reveals his identity to Commissioner Gordon before apparently sacrificing himself.
After the explosion, Bruce Wayne is believed to be dead. His estate is left to Alfred, and Wayne Manor is turned into an orphanage. Lucius Fox later discovers that Bruce had repaired the Bat’s autopilot system.
In the final scene, Alfred sees Bruce alive in Florence with Selina Kyle. This reveals that Bruce survived the explosion and chose to leave his former life as Batman behind. John Blake also discovers that his legal name is Robin and is given access to the Batcave, suggesting that he could continue Batman’s mission in the future.
