Story / Plot
The Dark Knight takes place after the events of Batman Begins. Batman has become a major force against crime in Gotham City, while Lieutenant James Gordon continues working to clean up the corrupt police department. Gotham also gains a new district attorney, Harvey Dent, who openly fights organized crime through the legal system.
Batman, Gordon, and Dent form an unofficial alliance to dismantle Gotham’s criminal organizations. Their efforts begin to put serious pressure on the city’s mob bosses, especially Sal Maroni. At the same time, Bruce Wayne sees Harvey Dent as someone who could eventually give Gotham a legitimate reason to no longer need Batman.
Everything changes when the Joker appears. Unlike the organized criminals Batman has fought before, the Joker is primarily interested in creating chaos. He offers to eliminate Batman for the mob, but his real objective is to force Batman, Gordon, Dent, and the people of Gotham into impossible moral choices.
The Joker gradually escalates his attacks. He threatens to kill innocent people unless Batman reveals his identity and manipulates the city into turning against its own institutions. Bruce eventually considers giving up his Batman identity, believing that Harvey Dent can become Gotham’s symbol of hope.
However, the Joker kidnaps Harvey Dent and Rachel Dawes and places them in separate locations containing explosives. Batman believes he is going to rescue Rachel, but the Joker has deliberately switched their locations. Batman reaches Harvey instead, while Rachel is killed in the explosion.
