Story / Plot
The story begins in the 1980s with Diana Prince secretly protecting people while living in Washington, D.C. Although she has become an experienced superhero, Diana still carries the emotional pain of losing Steve Trevor during World War I.
While working at the Smithsonian Institution, Diana meets Barbara Minerva, a brilliant but socially awkward geologist who becomes her friend. Barbara and Diana become involved in examining an ancient artifact known as the Dreamstone.
The Dreamstone has the ability to grant wishes, but every wish comes with a terrible price. Diana accidentally wishes for Steve Trevor to return, and her wish is granted when Steve’s consciousness returns in the body of another man.
Meanwhile, businessman Maxwell Lord becomes obsessed with the Dreamstone. He wants to use its power to transform himself into the world’s most powerful and influential person.
Maxwell eventually takes control of the Dreamstone and discovers that he can grant people’s wishes himself. As more and more people make wishes, Maxwell gains greater power, but the consequences become increasingly dangerous.
Barbara also makes a wish to become more confident and powerful. As Maxwell’s influence grows, Barbara’s wish transforms her physically and mentally, eventually turning her into the powerful and dangerous Cheetah.
Diana realizes that the Dreamstone’s power is destroying the world. She learns that the artifact was created by the god of lies, Dolos, also known as the Duke of Deception, and that its power comes with a terrible cost: every wish takes something from the person who makes it.
Diana must therefore find a way to stop Maxwell Lord and reverse the chaos created by the wishes before the world is destroyed.
Ending Explained
Near the end of the movie, Maxwell Lord has become the living embodiment of the Dreamstone. Instead of simply making his own wishes, he gains power by granting wishes to people around the world and taking something from each person in return.
As more people make wishes, Maxwell becomes increasingly powerful and the world begins to descend into chaos. His ultimate goal is to become powerful enough to control global events and reshape the world around his own desires.
Diana confronts Maxwell and realizes that defeating him through physical strength will not solve the problem. She learns that the only way to stop the Dreamstone’s effects is for people to renounce their wishes.
Meanwhile, Barbara has fully transformed into Cheetah and fights Diana. The battle becomes extremely dangerous, but Diana eventually defeats Barbara.
Diana then reaches Maxwell and uses the Lasso of Truth to connect with him. Through the Lasso, she makes him see the consequences of his actions and the suffering his wish has caused.
Maxwell finally renounces his wish. As he does, the wishes made around the world are reversed and the Dreamstone’s power disappears.
Steve’s return is also temporary because Diana must ultimately give up her wish to keep him alive. She says goodbye to Steve and accepts that she has to let him go once again.
The ending shows Diana walking through Washington, D.C. during the holiday season. She has accepted the loss of Steve and continues her mission of protecting humanity.
