Story / Plot

Man of Steel begins on the dying planet Krypton, where scientist Jor-El realizes that Krypton’s civilization is collapsing. He and Lara send their newborn son, Kal-El, away from the planet in a spacecraft so that their child can survive and potentially give humanity a new hope.

The baby lands on Earth and is discovered by Jonathan and Martha Kent in Kansas. They name him Clark and raise him as their son. As Clark grows older, he struggles to understand his unusual abilities and hides them from the world because Jonathan fears that people may reject or fear him.

After Jonathan’s death, Clark travels around the world while trying to understand who he really is. Eventually, he discovers an ancient Kryptonian scout ship buried in the Arctic and encounters a holographic version of his biological father, Jor-El. He learns that he is the last natural-born Kryptonian and that his people once attempted to control their civilization through genetic engineering.

Meanwhile, General Zod and his followers survive the destruction of Krypton after being imprisoned in the Phantom Zone. They eventually return and discover that Kal-El survived. Zod wants the Kryptonian genetic codex carried by Kal-El so that he can rebuild the Kryptonian race.

Zod’s forces arrive on Earth and demand that Kal-El surrender. Clark eventually reveals himself as Superman and chooses to protect humanity. The conflict leads to a massive battle in Metropolis, where Superman fights Zod and his forces while the military tries to stop the Kryptonian invasion.

Superman ultimately defeats Zod, but the battle causes enormous destruction. The movie ends with Clark beginning a new life at the Daily Planet while secretly preparing to become Earth’s protector.

Ending Explained
