Story / Plot
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets continues the story of Harry Potter, a young wizard who survived an attack by Lord Voldemort as a baby. After completing his first year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, Harry returns to the home of his aunt and uncle, the Dursleys, for the summer holidays. He expects to reunite with his friends Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger when the new school year begins, but his summer takes a strange turn when a house-elf named Dobby appears in his bedroom.
Dobby warns Harry that returning to Hogwarts will place him in terrible danger. The elf has secretly intercepted Harry’s letters from Ron and Hermione in an attempt to keep him away from the school. When Harry refuses to promise that he will stay home, Dobby causes a magical disturbance at the Dursleys’ house. The incident makes the family believe Harry is responsible for the trouble, and they lock him in his room to prevent him from returning to the wizarding world.
Ron and his brothers Fred and George arrive in a flying Ford Anglia and rescue Harry from the Dursleys. Harry spends the remainder of the summer at the Weasley family’s home, the Burrow. When the boys attempt to board the Hogwarts Express at Platform Nine and Three-Quarters, Harry and Ron find that the magical barrier is mysteriously closed to them. Unable to reach the train, they fly the enchanted car to Hogwarts, where they crash into the Whomping Willow, a violent magical tree on the school grounds.
The car survives the crash but throws Harry and Ron out before driving away into the Forbidden Forest. The two boys arrive at school in trouble and receive punishment for their reckless arrival. Despite this, Harry is happy to be back with his friends. However, the school soon becomes the centre of a frightening mystery when strange voices begin whispering to Harry from inside the walls. No one else can hear the voices, and Harry is disturbed by the fact that they seem to call for violence.
The mystery becomes more serious when Mrs Norris, the caretaker Argus Filch’s cat, is found petrified near a message written in blood on a wall. The message announces that the Chamber of Secrets has been opened and warns that the enemies of Slytherin’s heir should beware. The students learn an old Hogwarts legend: Salazar Slytherin, one of the school’s founders, supposedly built a secret chamber containing a monster that only his true heir could control. According to the legend, the heir would one day release the creature to attack students considered unworthy of studying magic.
Harry, Ron and Hermione begin investigating the attacks. Suspicion falls on several students, especially Draco Malfoy, who openly expresses hostility towards Muggle-born witches and wizards. Hermione suggests that they use Polyjuice Potion to disguise themselves and discover whether Draco knows anything about the attacks. The potion is difficult to prepare and requires ingredients that take time to obtain, but the friends persist because they fear that more students may be targeted.
Harry’s ability to understand the mysterious voices leads him to discover that he can speak Parseltongue, the language of snakes. During a duelling demonstration, Harry speaks to a conjured snake and unintentionally frightens the students watching. This makes some of them suspect that he is connected to Slytherin and may be the person opening the Chamber of Secrets. Harry is troubled because he does not understand his ability and fears that he may have something in common with Voldemort.
Meanwhile, the attacks continue. Several students are petrified, including Colin Creevey, Justin Finch-Fletchley and Hermione. The school becomes increasingly frightened, and the authorities begin to consider closing Hogwarts. Professor Gilderoy Lockhart, a famous wizard who has been appointed Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher, repeatedly boasts about his achievements but proves far less capable than his reputation suggests. His eagerness for attention makes him a poor guide during the growing crisis.
Harry and Ron eventually learn that the Chamber of Secrets was opened fifty years earlier, during another series of attacks. Hagrid was blamed at the time and expelled from Hogwarts, although Dumbledore continued to believe in him. The friends discover that a student named Myrtle died during the earlier incident and now haunts a girls’ bathroom as Moaning Myrtle. They also uncover a mysterious diary that once belonged to Tom Riddle, a former Hogwarts student who recorded his memories in it.
Harry discovers that the diary can communicate with him. When he writes in it, the diary responds and eventually shows him a memory of the previous Chamber of Secrets incident. In that memory, Tom Riddle accuses Hagrid of raising a dangerous creature. Harry initially believes the memory proves Hagrid was responsible for the earlier attacks, but the diary’s influence and Riddle’s selective account hide important parts of the truth.
As the school grows more dangerous, Hermione is petrified after making an important discovery. Although she cannot explain what she has found, she leaves behind a clue that helps Harry and Ron understand the creature responsible for the attacks. Harry realises that the monster is a basilisk, an enormous serpent whose direct gaze can kill. The victims survived because they saw the creature indirectly through reflections or through a camera, or because they were not looking directly into its eyes. Spiders fleeing Hogwarts and the strange voices Harry hears in the walls provide additional clues about the creature’s movements.
The mystery reaches its climax when Ginny Weasley disappears into the Chamber of Secrets. A message reveals that she has been taken into the chamber, and Harry realises that her life is in danger. Harry and Ron take the information to Lockhart, who attempts to escape rather than face the danger. They force him to accompany them into the girls’ bathroom, where they discover the entrance to the Chamber of Secrets. Lockhart tries to erase Harry and Ron’s memories with a stolen wand, but the spell backfires, causing a collapse that separates the boys from Lockhart.
Harry enters the Chamber alone and discovers Ginny lying unconscious near Tom Riddle. Riddle reveals that the diary contains a magical version of his sixteen-year-old self, preserved through his memories. He explains that he manipulated Ginny into opening the Chamber and carrying out his instructions without fully understanding what she was doing. Ginny had written her fears and secrets in the diary, allowing Riddle to gain control over her. As he grew stronger, he drained her life force and used her to unleash the basilisk on Hogwarts.
Riddle then reveals his true identity: he is the young Tom Marvolo Riddle, the boy who would eventually become Lord Voldemort. Harry understands that Voldemort’s past is connected to the attacks, but he must still find a way to save Ginny and stop the basilisk. At that moment, Fawkes, Dumbledore’s phoenix, arrives with the Sorting Hat. Harry calls for help, and Fawkes brings him the hat, from which Harry receives the sword of Godric Gryffindor.
Harry uses the sword to fight the basilisk. The giant serpent attacks him, but Fawkes helps by pecking out its eyes, preventing it from using its deadly gaze. Harry eventually drives the sword into the basilisk’s mouth, killing it. However, one of the creature’s venomous fangs pierces Harry’s arm, leaving him poisoned and close to death. Riddle believes he has won and prepares to use the diary to complete his control over Ginny.
Harry refuses to give up. He stabs the diary with the basilisk’s fang, destroying the object that contains Riddle’s preserved memory. The diary is damaged beyond repair, and Riddle’s image begins to disappear. The destruction of the diary also breaks his hold over Ginny. Fawkes’s tears have healing powers, and they cure Harry’s basilisk venom wound. Harry then rescues Ginny, and the group escapes the Chamber.
Ending Explained
Warning: Major spoilers for the ending of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.
Who Opened the Chamber of Secrets?
Ginny Weasley opened the Chamber of Secrets under the influence of Tom Riddle’s diary. She did not knowingly decide to attack her fellow students. After finding the diary, she began writing in it, believing that she was communicating with its former owner. Riddle gradually gained control over her thoughts and actions, using her to reopen the Chamber and release the basilisk.
The attacks were therefore not the result of Harry, Draco Malfoy or Hagrid. They were part of Riddle’s plan to purge Hogwarts of students he considered unworthy of studying magic, especially those born to non-magical parents. Ginny became the unwitting instrument of his scheme because the diary allowed Riddle to influence her while strengthening his own presence.
Who Is Tom Riddle, and How Is He Connected to Voldemort?
Tom Marvolo Riddle is the younger version of the wizard who later becomes Lord Voldemort. The diary preserves a magical version of Riddle created from his memories and personality. It is not simply an ordinary record of his school years: it can communicate with a person who writes in it, influence that person and use their life force to become stronger.
Riddle’s identity explains why the Chamber of Secrets was connected to the history of Hogwarts and why the attacks resembled those from fifty years earlier. He was the person responsible for the earlier opening of the Chamber, and he used the diary to repeat the plan decades later. The film also shows that Voldemort began as a talented but cruel student who valued control and purity of blood above the lives of others.
Why Does Harry Destroy the Diary with the Basilisk Fang?
The diary is the object through which Riddle communicates with Ginny and manipulates her. When Harry stabs it with the basilisk fang, the diary is destroyed and Riddle’s preserved presence disappears. Basilisk venom is extremely destructive to magical objects, which is why the fang can destroy the diary so effectively. The destruction frees Ginny from Riddle’s influence and prevents the diary from being used to repeat the attacks.
This moment is also significant because Harry destroys the diary without fully understanding its larger connection to Voldemort’s survival. The film establishes the diary as a dangerous object, while the wider series later reveals more about Voldemort’s methods of preserving his life and power.
Why Does Fawkes Save Harry?
Fawkes is Dumbledore’s phoenix, a magical bird associated with loyalty, renewal and healing. Fawkes arrives in the Chamber with the Sorting Hat and helps Harry fight the basilisk by attacking its eyes. After Harry is poisoned by a basilisk fang, Fawkes’s tears heal the wound and save his life. Fawkes’s arrival reflects Dumbledore’s trust in Harry and shows that Harry is not completely alone even when he must face danger without his friends.
Why Does Dumbledore Say It Is Our Choices That Show Who We Are?
After the Chamber incident, Harry worries that his ability to speak Parseltongue might mean he is similar to Voldemort. Dumbledore explains that Harry was placed in situations that made him seem connected to Slytherin, but his choices matter more than those similarities. Harry could have been sorted into Slytherin, yet he chose to resist cruelty and protect others.
The message is central to the Harry Potter story: a person’s abilities, background or fears do not determine their character. Harry and Voldemort share certain unusual connections, but their decisions reveal very different values. Harry risks his life to save Ginny and protect Hogwarts, while Riddle manipulates others to gain power.
What Happens to Lucius Malfoy at the End?
After the Chamber is closed and Ginny is rescued, Lucius Malfoy arrives with Dobby, his house-elf. Harry realises that Lucius was responsible for placing the diary among Ginny’s belongings, although Lucius had used it as a way to undermine the Weasley family and Dumbledore rather than openly revealing the full plan. Harry cleverly places the diary back into Lucius’s possession, hidden inside a sock. When Lucius throws the sock aside, Dobby catches it and is freed from his master’s service.
Dobby’s freedom is one of the film’s final victories. Lucius has treated Dobby as a servant who must obey him, but Harry uses the situation to help the elf gain his independence. The moment reinforces the film’s themes of loyalty, compassion and the importance of standing up to those who abuse power.
Does the Chamber of Secrets Mystery End Completely?
The immediate danger ends when Harry kills the basilisk, destroys the diary and rescues Ginny. Hogwarts can reopen, the petrified students can be treated, and Hagrid is cleared of the accusation that led to his expulsion. However, the film does not end Voldemort’s larger story. The diary reveals a part of his past, and his continued existence remains a threat to the wizarding world.
The ending also sets up Harry’s third year at Hogwarts. Harry has gained a deeper understanding of Voldemort’s history, learned more about his own abilities, and strengthened his friendship with Ron and Hermione. The film closes with the school restored to safety, but the wider conflict between Harry and Voldemort is far from over.
